BHSC Teacher Feature Friday

🔎 Each week, a central office committee reviews nominations and selects one educator from a rotating school (BES, HES, BHS, HHS). Winners receive a $50 Amazon gift card courtesy of the Kolton Kaiser Foundation. The nominator’s identity is revealed to the honoree on announcement day to keep the fun and suspense.

For our final week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday is a double feature, and this post spotlights Henryville High School.

Jeff Schroeder, HHS, English teacher

Experience: 36 years (33 at West Clark and Borden-Henryville)
College/University: IUS (Bachelor's) and Indiana Wesleyan (Master's)
Fun Facts: Mr. Schroeder's best sport in high school was tennis, yet he decided to play baseball in college.

"I made the decision 33 years ago to leave Madison Consolidated High School to accept a position at Henryville High School to teach English/Language Arts and coach baseball. That turned out to be one of the best decisions that I have ever made. The relationships that I have made with students, faculty, and community members during those years are near and dear to me. , " says Mr. Schroeder.

Mr. Schroeder was nominated by former student Cassie Walton. Her words about Mr. Schroeder reveal just how important positive, intentional relationships are in working with students. "Mr. Schroeder was my English teacher my senior year. I had him first period, and he is truly the only reason I made it to school each morning. I didn’t have any friends, didn’t talk that much. But Mr. Schroeder made sure to have at least one conversation with me each day because he knew I didn’t have anyone in my corner. He truly made such an impact on me my senior year, and I definitely couldn’t have done it without him," Cassie wrote.

Cassie’s story is a powerful reminder of the profound difference a caring teacher can make. Congratulations, Mr. Schroeder, on this wonderful recognition of your empathy, dedication, and heart. Thank you for making sure no one stands alone.

What a great way to wrap up our inaugural year of BHSC Teacher Features, sponsored by the Kolton Kaiser Foundation! This year, thirty-six BHSC teachers were recognized by students, families, and community members for the impact they've made on BHSC students. Nominations will reopen next school year for BHSC Teacher Features for each of the four schools.

Happy Last Day of School! 🥳🎉

We have officially made it to the finish line of the school year! As you head into a well-deserved summer break, we have one quick (but important) thing to cross off your to-do list so you can truly relax.

Registration for the 2026-27 school year is moving fast! We’ve officially broken past the halfway point, and the leaderboard is shifting as we speak. Thank you to all the families who are already completely set for the fall!

If your family falls into the "Not Started" or "In Progress" category, please take a few minutes before switching into full summer mode to log in and knock it out. Getting this done now is crucial—it directly helps our schools plan for staffing, rosters, schedules, and transportation so we can hit the ground running in August.

🏆 The Last Day Leaderboard 🏆
Our registration numbers are climbing across the board, and the race for the top spot is heating up! Check out the updated standings as of today:

🥇 Borden Elementary: 61.59% (Still leading the charge and breaking past the 60% milestone! 🎉)
🥈 Henryville Elementary: 54.77% (Gaining fast and officially over the halfway mark! 👀)
🥉 Borden High School: 47.57% (Closing in on that 50% finish line! 👏)
💪 Henryville High School: 42.77% (A massive jump from the last update! The comeback is officially on! 🔥)

Another important note: 72 families across the district have applications started that are unsubmitted. Get those apps submitted!

Every single submission moves the needle. Which school can rally the most and shake up the leaderboard for the start of summer?

Have a wonderful, safe, and happy last day of school! ☀️

Zerach Coats, HHS, English teacher

Experience: 2 years
College/University: IUS
Fun Facts: Mr. Coats loves snow skiing and preaching.

Mr. Coats says, "I think that my favorite part of being a teacher is the relationships I get to build with the staff and students around me. I love getting to know the students and I love having the opportunity to make an impact on their lives. It always makes me happy when a student comes up to talk to me about their sports, hobbies, families, or whatever they want. It gives me an opportunity to grow my relationships with them and it proves to me that they know I care about them, not only as students but as actual individual people as well. "

Mr. Coats was nominated by a middle school student's family, who wrote, "My daughter speaks so highly of him. He really has a way with middle school teens, which in itself is a blessing! "

Congratulations, Mr. Coats! Thank you for choosing to make a difference at BHSC.

BHSC Teacher Feature Friday (a few days late)

🔎 Each week, a central office committee reviews nominations and selects one educator from a rotating school (BES, HES, BHS, HHS). Winners receive a $50 Amazon gift card courtesy of the Kolton Kaiser Foundation. The nominator’s identity is revealed to the honoree on announcement day to keep the fun and suspense.

This week, the BHSC Teacher Feature Friday spotlights Henryville High School.

Matthew Payne, HHS, FACS Teacher; Strength & Conditioning Coach

Experience: 2 years with BHSC, 6 years overall teaching
College/University: Bachelor's from WKU, Master's from University of St. Francis, & currently pursuing an additional Master's from USI
Fun facts: Mr. Payne says, "This is a second career for me. Football was my favorite sport I played in my career but most don’t know that I played college rugby at WKU."

Mr. Payne said his favorite part of teaching is that he loves what he does. "This isn’t a job because a job is something you go to and collect a pay check. I love what I do and feel honored to help educate and pass on my life experiences with the kids here. My passion is fitness so I’d say teaching my weight classes and after school training is my favorite part along with being the head middle school football coach."

Mr. Payne was nominated by the family of Jaxon and Ben Kirk, who wrote, "Mr. Payne goes above and beyond when it comes to the health and participation of the students in the gym. He takes his own time to help them lift weight and work out during summer hours! He also stays after school to let the kids work out and lift weights. He coaches football and is an excellent example of sportsmanship and discipline. He works the kids hard but is right there with them, working along side them, pushing them to be their best selves. He is encouraging when they need encouragement and disciplines when they need correction in a positive, supportive way. We absolutely love Mr. Payne and all the dedication and time he puts forth with these kids on a daily basis. He deserves this recognition in our opinion."

Congratulations, Mr. Payne! Thanks for making a difference at BHSC!

HHS will be on asynchronous learning on Friday, March 6th due to increasing illnesses among students and staff. We will not be providing transportation to and from Prosser on this day. This will not count against your Prosser student's attendance as long as you stay in contact with your Prosser Instructor regarding work for the day. Students are not permitted to drive to Prosser.
